Cheng-wen Wang

Department of History, Tunghai University

This article aims to comprehend the marriage networks of Christians based on detailed historical materials, and thereby establish the role played by native Christians in the development of Christianity in Taiwan outside the scope of missionaries. It is concluded that Christians were not merely passive recipients and believers, they also played roles in promoting, adjusting, and changing methods in regard to the mission of Christianity. Believers were able to influence the development of Christianity in Taiwan from the bottom up, not least through the importance of marriage networks in making communities of believers.
