Roy Porter’s History of Madness

Wen-ji Wang

Department of History, National Taipei University

Roy Porter was known, among other things, as a historian of medicine, the body, sexuality, psychiatry, the eighteenth-century England, and the Enlightenment. Taking Porter’s Madness: A Brief History as the starting point, the article reviews his historiography of madness. Some comparative notes are also provided between Porter and Foucault with reference to their views on madness at the age of reason and the voice of the mad.
