Reflections on Narrative Viewpoints About University History

Chien-wen Wang

Department of History, National Cheng Kung University

Historians work in universities, but they seldom take university history as the topic of their research. This paper discusses narrative viewpoints about university history based on my experience writing about the history of National Cheng Kung University. I think that the narrative for university history should resemble a performance in the theatre. All the actors and scenery organize a drama. Historians can’t ignore any actor who has participated in this drama, because they gather the whole history of the university.

Writing university history is like “field work” for historians who are working in the university. A great historian must be the narrator of his age, and historian’s narratives are always contemporary with their own stories.
