本人過去的研究大體圍繞著知識（尤其是技術知識）和文化之間的關係。我的基本設想是知識本身不是一個獨立的系統，而是文化的表徵。許多我們熟知的知識體系，除了本身的知識內容外，也有相當強烈的文化意涵。例如曆算牽涉到中國王朝的合法性；十七世紀的西方解剖學也同時展現了上帝的偉大。知識不但型塑了我們對外在世界的認知，也同時建構了我們生活世界的秩序。我的論文大體都是以十六至十八世紀的中西文化交流，討論當時西方科技知識傳入中國時，知識內容的改變、知識移轉時在新環境中的制度性安排，以及移轉時所生的文化調適問題。未來的研究方向大致上仍沿著這樣的設想進行，開發的新研題將包括「人與動物的關係」等。
